I Don't Mean To Get Off on a Rant. . .
Apr. 8th, 2011 04:17 pmBut today I will.
I DO NOT want the gov't shut down. The thought of the men and women in harm's way having an interruption in their pay is abominable.*
So is cutting the funding for Planned Parenthood. It's NOT about abortion. It's about a woman's access to vital, low-cost health care.
One in five woman in the US who has received care at a Planned Parenthood. I'm one of them and I'm standing up and telling the leaders of this country, regardless of the party, that letting a few insane zealots shut down the government--or cut off funding for PP is NOT acceptable.
-----------
The federal government will shut down because extremists in Congress are pursuing a vendetta against Planned Parenthood. It's not about the budget — it's about trying to destroy an organization that provides birth control, HIV testing, and cancer screenings. It's time to stand up and call these extremists out. Sign the open letter from Planned Parenthood:
http://ppaction.org/shutdown
-----------
*For the record: I know many folks personally who will be impacted by this FAILBOAT by the government. I'm not trying to discount anyone's loss of a paycheck. I've lived through those furloughs as a kid and they ain't easy or fun.

The Humans are Fine
Nov. 9th, 2010 09:44 pmLet me state that again. The Humans are FINE. L, B, and Polka are all safe.
However, tonight a dear friend of mine (and a friend to many of you),
thalionar B, and Polka lost all of their wordly goods in a fire.
They need help. Here's a list of clothing sizes.
Polka 4T, 8 or 9 shoes, She likes books, dolls, blocks, dragons, tinker bell, princesses, cooking/food stuff, play-do, and pretty much anything else.
B: (mens) Medium/32x32/9.5 shoes
...
L.: 22/24, 28 pants (or 7 Blue), size 11 shoe
Paypal: thalionar@gmail.com
CRF Invaders: We will be collecting cash donations for Magpie, Wilhelm and Polka. Details are still being worked out, but I'll keep you updated.

Friday Five, With a Twist
Jul. 2nd, 2010 06:13 amIn honor of A.J. Hartley's paperback release of his wonderful fantasy novel this week we have something different for the Friday Five.
Five reasons to read Act of Will by A.J. Hartley.
1. Because adventure and humor should go together more often.
2. Because you're already a fan of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, right? (If you're not, you really should be).
3. Because the chances of the main character who narrates the story making it to the end are virtually nill. Always fun.
4. Because you've always wondered what a fantasy novel by J.D. Salinger would sound like.
5. Because it's now out in paperback for $7.99 which is, as Will would tell you, less than the price of a decent six pack.

In case you haven't heard, Amazon, in a fight with Macmillan, decided to pull all Macmillan books-- and their imprints-- from its shelves this weekend. You can read more about it over here.
As a result, I've decided to part company with Amazon and told them so.
( Amazon's response )
I've already closed my account. I don't care they are tussling with Macmillan over who is going to earn more money from the books sold (although selfishly I'd like to see the publishing house get it, in the hopes it will end up in the pockets of my friends).
I don't want to do business with a company that uses my dollars as a club against another company. Amazon can bully the publishing world without me.

Goodbye, CBS
Jan. 27th, 2010 06:28 pmI won't be watching your network at all anymore.
Your decision to air a thinly-veiled anti-choice ad is costing you one viewer.
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/tim-tebow-super-bowl-ad-cbs-air-controversial/story?id=9667638
I'm really going to miss NCIS, Numb3rs and CSI. Even more, I'm going to miss watching them in syndication. I dread writing all those letters to the stations that carry those shows, letting them know I won't be watching any CBS show they elect to carry.
In other words, Dear CBS, I'm taking my ball and going home. Game over.

Holiday Cards
Nov. 17th, 2009 03:45 pmThinking about sending me a holly-daze card this year?
Well, DON'T!!!!

Sep. 11th, 2009 08:19 amOh beautiful for heroes proved,
In liberating strife,
Who more than self, their country loved,
And mercy more than life.
America, America may God thy gold refine,
Til all success be nobleness
And every gain devined.
Oh beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties,
Above the fruited plain,
America, America
God shed his grace on thee,
He crowned thy good in brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea.

For your amusement
Jul. 2nd, 2009 05:17 pmWhen I read the following passage yesterday I literally laughed aloud in the middle of a croweded Steak n Shake. I provide it for your amusement.
"Rachel smiled. I checked my fucked-o-meter. The gauge was set firmly on 'Seven ways to Sunday.' That seemed about right."
Isn't that just freakin' brilliant??
The quote is from J. F. Lewis' novel, Staked.
I'm about 2/3 of the way through it and it's an amusing read. Heading to the beach, pool, mountains, back porch, front stoop this summer? Want something to read that is good fun? Treat yourself to this. I gave up on most vampire books quite awhile ago, but this one makes me a fan again. Eric, our (un)hero is snarky and at times a bit grumbly. In fact, there are a few people on my flist who, if became a vamp, I believe would be more like Eric than not ~cough, mutter Sweetness, cough~.
Go. Buy. Read. Enjoy. Thank me later. ;-)

Phone: Missing
Mar. 22nd, 2009 06:55 pmSomewhere along the way this weekend I lost my cell phone. This means I lost everyone's numbers. (and a few text messages that REALLY mattered).
I plan on buying a new phone when I get home tomorrow. In the mean time, it would surely makeme feel better if y'all would leave your contact info in a screened comment below, or e-mail.
Thanks, y'all!

? for the Crafty
Jan. 16th, 2009 03:21 pmI have a silver chain that I NEVER take off. On it I'm wearing my temporary replacement spider web pendant.
The jump ring for the pendant keeps opening ever so slightly. It opens just enough to get caught in the open weave of my chain. I'm afraid that eventually it will work itself free or will snag and break the chain.
I've tried squeezing the jump ring more tightly closed. That hasn't really helped.
Would crazy glue help? Other ways to keep the silly thing on the chain where it belongs?

Friday Five
Jan. 16th, 2009 01:06 pmFive Good Things for Today:
1. The Miracle of US Air Flight 1549.
2. While that's a hard one to top, I'll add the ferry boat pilots who saw the plane clearing the GWB, realized that it was a crash, not another terrorist attack, got their boats fired up and chugged out to the plane very quickly after it settled on the water.
I love New York.

Got anything worth smiling about?

Dear Authors
Jan. 5th, 2009 01:10 pmDear Authors,
I love you. I love what you write. I want to read everything you write that I can get my greedy lil hands on. Please to be forwarding me your grocery and to-do lists. Kthanx.
I think it's cool that you have an LJ. However, it would be COOLER if your writing LJ was a community rather than a personal journal.
You see, in order for me to read you on my flist, I have to friend you. While there's some writers out there I love
madkestrel, some I really like
davidbcoe, and some who are new to me
jimhines, I don't want strangers having access to my personal blog.
Yes, I know writers are busy people and who am I to even THINK they would have time to read my blog. I don't. However, since my LJ is friends only for many very good reasons, including what I do for a living (most of you didn't know, for instance, that I work for an ~ahem~ alphabet soup agency, did you??????), I'd love to stay in the loop on my favorite authors happenings without having to allow them access to my LJ. D. and J really don't need to know that much about me, ya know?
Yes, I know I can use filters. I already do. But that's just one more hassle in the process. Make it easier for your fans to find you and read what you're writing, not harder. Had David not mentioned something today in Magical Words I wouldn't have read his blog. Not reading his blog means I would have missed catching on to Jim Hines, who has a book coming out tomorrow that sounds AMAZING!
Toss in anther factor. I've met
davidbcoe. I'm hesitant to friend him for fear of appearing like a creepy-stalker-fangirl (which I am, but I don't want to LOOK like one, ya dig?).
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

- Pick 15 of your favourite movies.
- Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
- Post them here for everyone to guess.
- No Googling/ using IMDb search functions! DON'T CHEAT!
- Cross out a quote and write the answer when someone has guessed right.

Cooking/recipe help
Nov. 14th, 2008 12:01 pmI *really* like the green beans from the local Chinese joints. They are sauted in oil and garlic(??)-- and probably some other things.
I've experimented at home and haven't had much luck.
Ideas, anyone?
